Photo calorie estimates: what to review before saving

Author: ·

Treat a calorie suggestion from a photo as a starting point. Before saving, check whether the entry represents your portion, consider the extras and decide whether you have a value you would rather enter yourself. Elite lets you review and edit its AI estimate; a photograph is not an exact measurement of a meal.

1. Decide what the entry represents

Are you recording a whole plate or your share of a dish? Photograph the portion you want the diary entry to describe. If you choose a short description instead of a photo, name the food and describe the portion in ordinary words. A shared salad bowl should not become one person's meal simply because it is in the frame. This checks the context of your entry; it does not guarantee the accuracy of the AI.

2. Remember the ingredients and extras

Sauce under pasta, oil added at the table or milk in coffee may be difficult to identify in a picture. Before accepting the result, think through what the meal actually included. For a text entry, mention ingredients you know, such as pasta with vegetables, pesto and grated cheese. You do not need to invent weights or guess a restaurant's recipe when that information is unavailable.

3. Review the value and edit when needed

Elite suggests approximate calories, which you can adjust or replace with your own value. If you use a package label, first check whether its figures refer to 100 g, one serving or the whole product, then relate that information to the amount you are recording. An exact-looking number on a screen does not make the estimate an exact measurement. When the ingredients or quantities are unknown, remember that the record remains an estimate.

Example: pasta with sauce

Imagine your plate of pasta beside a bowl of sauce shared by the table. Relate the entry to your pasta and the sauce you added, rather than the entire shared bowl. Review the suggestion before confirming it. This example illustrates the order of the checks; it does not assign a calorie count to the dish or promise a particular calculation result.

A quick check before saving

Does the entry describe the right meal? Do the portion and extras match what you are recording? Do you want to keep the AI suggestion, adjust it or enter your own value? After saving, you can return to the diary in bubble or list view. The aim is a meal record you understand, not a judgment about whether food was good or bad.
